The Washington Newspaper Publishers Association (WNPA) is using our nation’s 250th birthday celebration to run a sustained, statewide campaign — “250 Years of the First Freedom” — that uses local newspapers to remind Washingtonians what the First Amendment is for, why a free press matters, and why an informed public is the precondition for everything else a democracy is supposed to do. The LWVWA is partnering with WNPA, which is asking local leagues to write one or more companion pieces -- op-eds and letters to the editor -- placed in your local newspaper. There are three stages to the project timeline: July 4, Sept. 17 (Constitution Day), and October through December. If you are interested in writing one or more letters to the editor for this project, contact Kate Hobbie at krhobbie@gmail.com or Dee Anne Finken at dfinken@lwvwa.org. | Are You Interested? LWVWA Affinity Group on Data Centers in WA State
Interest is building in League membership to understand data centers, what they mean for electricity rates, natural resources, community environments, economics, and more. Therefore, a Data Center Affinity Group for members of the LWVWA is being formed. If interested contact Martin Gibbins mgibbins@lwvwa.org. | Check out LWVSKC Committees and Join In!
Do you know about the LWVSKC Committees and how to join in? The LWSVKC currently has eight active Committees, including: Program, Economics and Taxation, Unite and Rise, Education, Investment, Voters Services, Youth Civics, and Girl Scouts. We will highlight one each week for the next few weeks. This week learn about Investment...
Investment
The Investment Committee meets on Zoom at a minimum of two times per year with our investment advisor to discuss the performance and market outlook of our portfolio of investment assets. We discuss any cash needs that the LWV-SKC might have over the next six months, and can delve into our asset allocation and the types of investments we have, guided by our Investment Policy Statement. We welcome new committee members - you don't have to be a LWVSKC Board member - that are interested in investing and have familiarity and/or experience in financial matters. Please contact Cindy Piennett, Investment Committee chair: cindypiennett@gmail.com. | Register For The Next King County Elections Observer Orientation

| Fraud in King County Elections?
With all the chatter around suspected fraud in elections, the LWVSKC reached out to King County Elections to understand the instances of fraud - or rather suspected fraud in King County. Here's what we learned - and what you can confidently share with your community. . .
Following every election, King County Elections refers cases of suspected fraud to the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for investigation. A referral to the Prosecuting Attorney's Office does not mean someone committeed fraud. It means that King County Elections believes there is enough inconsistency to warrant investigation. It is up to the Prosecuting Attorney's Office to decide what rises to the level of prosecution.
-
After the 2024 Presidential Election, King County Elections referred a total of 40 cases out of 1.1 million ballots returned. (25 of the 40 were situations where a registered voter signed their own name on someone else’s ballot envelope.) Those 40 cases represent three-thousandths of one percent of all ballots returned.
-
These numbers are in line with what King County Elections saw and referred to the Prosecuting Attorney's Office in the 2020 Presidential Election. A total of 36 referrals were made to the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office and over 1.2 million ballots were returned.
