King County Elections has designed a special Election Advocate training for LWVSKC members to be held on Saturday, July 11 from 10 - noon at King County Elections in Renton. Learn all you need to instill confidence in your King County community regarding upcoming elections. The Washington Newspaper Publishers Association (WNPA) is using our nation’s 250th birthday celebration to run a sustained, statewide campaign — “250 Years of the First Freedom” — that uses local newspapers to remind Washingtonians what the First Amendment is for, why a free press matters, and why an informed public is the precondition for everything else a democracy is supposed to do. The LWVWA is partnering with WNPA, which is asking local leagues to write one or more companion pieces -- op-eds and letters to the editor -- placed in your local newspaper. There are three stages to the project timeline: July 4, Sept. 17 (Constitution Day), and October through December. Do you know about the LWVSKC Committees and how to join in? The LWSVKC currently has eight active Committees, including: Program, Economics and Taxation, Unite and Rise, Education, Investment, Voters Services, Youth Civics, and Girl Scouts. We will highlight one each week for the next few weeks. This week we highlight our last three committees - Voter Services, Youth Civics and Girl Scouts as they are all connected (Youth Civics is a subset of Voter Services and Girl Scouts is a subset of Youth Civics)
Voter Services
Voter Services describes a group of activities focused on encouraging informed and active citizen participation in government elections. The five main areas of work in Voter Services include: voter registration, get out the vote work, candidate and educational forums, civic education, and observing at King County Elections. We often partner with other organizations to help spread the word about the importance of voting - schools, libraries, non-profit organizations, community festivals, and more. Voter services activities can take place at many venues and are always a wonderful chance to get out into the community, meet fellow citizens and neighbors, and espouse the importance of voting (especially at the local level!). Youth Civics
The LWVSKC Youth Civics Committee is a subset of the Voter Services Committee. The focus of the committee is voter services work in support of middle school children though approximately age 28. Work includes voter registration, voter outreach, civics education (free online resources found here,) and student organized and run candidate and educational forums. The LWVSKC Youth Civics Committee meets approximately every six weeks.
Girl Scouts Are Our Future League Members!
LWVSKC’s Girl Scout committee is a subset of the LWVSKC's Youth Civics Committee. It is dedicated to bringing civics education to girls with fun, engaging, democracy related activities. We work with Girl Scout troops from Daisies to Seniors, brainstorming new activities appropriate to every age level. We use everything from games to crafts and skits, to make democracy issues come alive for the girls. Our activities have covered voting rights, local and national government, community involvement and activism, and we’re expanding our repertoire all the time! Our tabling events have taught us that many young women have never heard of the LWV. The Girl Scout program introduces girls to the League so that they will know who we are and be ready to join when they’re old enough (age 16 and up). In working with Girl Scout troops, not only are we bringing our civics programming to a whole new population, we’re raising the LWV’s profile in neighborhoods around King County. The Girl Scout Committee needs more members to help us reach a greater diversity of girls in more communities. We meet on an as-needed basis, typically once or twice prior to each troop presentation. To observe at King County Elections, you need to participate in an observer orientation (if you have not already in the past two years). Below are the upcoming dates/times of the next observer orientation sessions. Please RSVP to Barb at president@lwvskc.org with the date/time of the session you wish to attend - you must do this ahead of attending. All observer orientations are held at King County Elections 919 SW Grady Way, Renton, WA 98057. (There is a limit of ten LWVSKC members per session.)

Unite and Rise 8.5 aims to build a movement of 8.5 million individuals to fight back against the anti-democratic actions of the current administration. The number 8.5 million is the estimated number of voters it would take to bring about change through nonviolent protest.
