Ways to Get Active

The League of Women Voters has encouraged informed and active citizen participation in government for over 100 years. We'd love to have you join us in our work.

Become a Member and Volunteer

The League offers many opportunities to support its mission to encourage informed and active participation in government. Volunteers work to uplift our democracy through increased civic engagement. Become a member and volunteer to:

  • Organize candidate forums
  • Organize educational forums
  • Research and draft educational material about ballot measures
  • Participate with our Communications group to publicize information about League's activities and efforts
  • Register voters and help get out the vote with our Voter Services Team
  •  Observe at King County Elections
  • Promote civics learning and engagement
  • Serve on our Board
View this brief (13 min) Voter Registration video to learn how to register voters/get out the vote and you'll be ready to volunteer at our next event!

Serve on a Committee or Join a Team

If you have an active interest in a particular issue, you might decide to volunteer on a committee. It's a great opportunity to meet and talk to community leaders, stakeholder organizations, and experts where you can have a direct impact on local issues that affect you. Our current committees and teams include:

Join a Unit

Units are small groups of League members who meet to discuss the current monthly forum or other topical issues. Units help organize and connect members to League outreach activities. They are a wonderful place to build lifelong friendships. Meetings are currently all online for safety, and members attend the unit meeting(s) that best fits their schedule.

  • Look here to learn more about Units, see the schedule of meetings, and join a Unit today!

BoardNom2025

Join the Board

LWVSKC has had a very engaged Board this year and most are staying on to continue to lead and lift up LWVSKC work. Now is your chance to step up, join in and contribute to LWVSKC in new and more impactful ways. Below are roles we are looking to fill for the coming year (or two) - starting Jul 2025 - Jun 2026 or 2027.  (Typically, we look to Board members to commit to two-year time frames.) This year, we created a number of options to serve as a co-director with an experienced partner/co-director, easing the on-boarding process.

If you have interest in any of these roles and would like to explore the opportunity further, please contact
Sarah Haeger at nominate@LWVSKC.org.

Our Board is a wonderful group of dedicated volunteers, doing meaningful work - join us in one of the following roles:

  • President or Co-PresidentsKim and Barb have been Co-Presidents and are looking for someone or two people to step up and take the lead.  They are very willing to work with you to transition and provide whatever necessary support is needed.
  • Communications DirectorVarious folks have been chipping in to coordinate between the weekly email, The Voter newsletter, our Because of You! bi-annual report, LWVSKC's website, social media, etc.  This can also be a shared role. If you have Communications work or volunteer experience please reach out!
  • Advocacy Co-DirectorOur LWVSKC 1st VP Britt Miles is taking on one half of the Advocacy Co-Director role in the coming year and is looking for a partner in this important work. Step up and be an advocate for our democracy with Britt!
  • Program DirectorLWVSKC has missed having a Program Director to facilitate our education forums and support our consensus and program planning work. If you like project work this could be a good fit for you as most of this work is "small projects" with specific beginning and end dates that you would then facilitate/organize. If you are an organizer now is your time to step up!
  • Development Director or Co-DirectorAs an NGO, LWVSKC relies on financial support from members and the community at large to support the work we do.  As a result, fundraising is an essential part of our work.  If you or you and a friend are interested in helping grow LWVSKC through this important work, please reach out.  There is a general calendar that we follow but new/creative ideas are very welcome!
  • Voter Services Co-DirectorJulie is staying on as Voter Services Director - doing an awesome job! But she is looking for someone new who would like to work with her as Co-Director. Voter services work is such a large part of LWVSKC's community work - what a great way to further your impact!

Attend a Forum

Forums are free, open to the public and serve to educate members of the community at large about specific issues the League is suited to address. Find more information about our forums here and visit our event calendar to see what's happening this month!

Become an Observer

Members of our Observer Corps volunteer to attend public meetings and report back on the business of government groups. Our Observers:

  • Make sure the government is following open meeting ("sunshine") laws;
  • Promote transparency and accountability in government through regular oversight;
  • Educate the public about what is going on in government; and
  • Identify issues for League advocacy.

Email observercorps@lwvskc.org to learn more or sign up!

Speak Up!

The LWV of New Jersey has shared training on how to write an effective letter to the editor. You already know that letters to the editor can shift public debate, exert pressure on public officials, and shape future media coverage – now you can learn how to write to have the greatest impact. Speak up, have your say, and make a difference!

See a video of the training here, and the slides here
