Empowering Voters. Defending Democracy.
Join Us!!!

You Are Needed More Than Ever In 2026!

Happy New Year! Time to power up and take action!  The League of Women Voters of Seattle King County (LWVSKC) is encouraging you to make a new year’s resolution to do just a bit more in 2026 to empower voters and defend democracy.  What might that look like?  Let’s take a look at all that you can do!

First, time to power up! Time to get energized, stronger and more effective! The LWVSKC is aiming to amplify our voices this year with you and our collective power!  We are motivated and hope you are too to make a difference throughout the King County community!

Second, make your resolution to do a bit more in 2026. We are all capable of stepping up just a bit in our support whether that be through volunteering, financial support or some combination of both. The LWVSKC is comprised of a strong and growing membership (approaching 600), with folks from all different walks of life that have a variety of skillsets and talents to apply to the League’s mission. Here are ways you can empower voters and defend democracy in 2026:

  • Not a member yet? Get active now and join the LWVSKC here

  • Volunteer for the LWVSKC Board. The LWVSKC Board needs folks in various positions to support the execution of our mission. The Board meets once a month and is inviting you to explore this volunteer opportunity. Time is typically for two years, July 1, 2026 - June 30, 2028. Contact Chelsea at nominate@lwvskc.org for more information or reach out to Barb at president@lwvskc.org to hear about the work of the current board.

  • Join a LWVSKC Unit in your area or the Virtual Unit. Units are subgroups of the LWVSKC that meet, typically monthly, to focus on very local issues, support LWVSKC events, and also at times, engage in LWVWA level work. Contact Sarah Beth or Keela at unitliaison@lwvskc.org to find your Unit.

  • Join a LWVSKC Committee. The LWVSKC has several committees that you could get active with and make a difference in this year. Check out the committees here.

  • Give just a bit more - possibly sign up for monthly donations here or choose to increase your periodic or annual financial support. (From the typical League membership of $75, the LWVSKC receives only $15.)
  • Volunteer for something new in 2026. Here are a few suggestions — observe at King County Elections, take on a leadership role in your LWVSKC Unit or LWVSKC Committee, take on a larger role at a candidate or educational forum, and/or come to a LWVSKC Board meeting (on zoom) and learn more about LWVSKC.

  • Support the LWVSKC with your technical skills - website, social media, training, streaming/recording, etc. The LWVSKC is always in need of communications support - internally for the LWVSKC as well as for various events/forums the LWVSKC hosts.
The impact the LWVSKC can have throughout King County depends on you and the LWVSKC’s collective engagement.  We welcome and encourage you to do just a bit more this year and in doing so the LWVSKC will have a greater impact and further voter empowerment. Together we will lift up our democracy and the King County community. Let’s all power up and resolve to do a bit more in 2026!

Documentary proof of citizenship (DPOC) supporters are making every effort to impose requirements for voters to prove their citizenship when they register to vote through any possible channel. This includes a petition to the Election Assistance Commission, outside influence from state officials to members of Congress, and state legislative efforts when legislative sessions begin in January. The League will not stand idly by, and we need your help to stop these unnecessary requirements.

Additionally, the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act has passed the House and could get a vote in the Senate at any time. This bill would require citizenship documentation to register to vote despite the fact that voters in every state are already required to affirm or verify their citizenship status when registering.

It is already illegal for non-citizens to register and vote in federal or state elections. Additionally, we have processes to ensure our elections are secure and that only eligible voters are casting ballots. State election officials have systems to verify an individual voter’s eligibility and ensure voter rolls are accurate.

Legislation like the SAVE Act is another in a long list of tactics, like strict voter photo ID requirements and limitations on voter assistance in languages other than English, which seek to make it more difficult for voters of color and naturalized citizens to vote. Americans do not need MORE obstacles to vote.

Congress must act to ensure that every eligible US citizen has the freedom to vote unimpeded by discriminatory rules rooted in fear and division.

Urge your Senators to oppose the SAVE Act

Unite and Rise!
“From the flagrant disregard for congressional authority and governmental checks and balances to defying Supreme Court orders...one thing is abundantly clear: our country is in a constitutional crisis." (LWV CEO Celina Stewart and President Dianna Wynn) We the people must fight back. That is why the LWV has launched Unite and Rise 8.5

Unite & Rise 8.5 aims to build a movement of 8.5 million individuals to unite and rise up against the anti-democratic actions of this administration. Launched in May 2025 and running until the 2026 midterm elections, this initiative is part of LWV's Women Defend Democracy campaign. Through the Women Defend Democracy campaign, the League will work to:

  • Provide Democracy Education & Election Administration Support
  • Restore and Defend Voting Rights Protections
  • Abolish the Electoral College
  • Protect Democracy Organizations & Institutions
  • Fight for Reproductive Freedoms
Unite and Rise 8.5 will fight for our democracy on multiple fronts, from the courts to the streets. Here's what you can do now:
  • Commit to action:  Sign our commitment form to Unite and Rise for democracy here: Unite and Rise form
  • Protect equal voting rights:  Tell your representatives to support the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act
  • “Turn Up the Heat” on elected officials:  Connect directly with your representatives on the issues that matter via Town Halls and other opportunities.
  • Oppose federal interferences:  Tell Congress to fully investigate the legality of President Trump's actions in US cities and to oppose the misuse of federal authority.
  • Raise your voice about illegal deportations:  Join mobilizations around immigrant rights and due process with organizations like the National Partnership for New Americans, United We Dream, and others.
  • Act locally:  Join local organizations like League of Women Voters of Seattle King County to act on the issues that matter in your community.
